Make Your Food Photography Sessions a Delicious Treat with these Tips!

Posted by Zara Jones | March 28, 2019 | Photography

Food photography is one of the most challenging types of photography. Like how a painting is made, food photography starts with a blank canvas and layer by layer the photo is constructed. This is done till there is a perfect balance and the photo looks all natural. The photographer is the decision maker in the photography sessions as he has attained technical proficiency with the camera. Food photography should be like working on a story. Be it a simple homemade food recipe or a five-star hotel presentation. Here are a few food photography tips which can improve the photography levels and give a better presentation.

Choose the Correct Angle

Only a few camera angles are available in food photography and choice depends on the type of description required. The type of food needs to be analyzed beforehand and the uniqueness needs to be identified. Then the camera needs to be placed accordingly which highlights these qualities. For example, if a cupcake is shot from the front its toppings stand out, but the viewer is not able to see anything when photographed from the top.

Surrounding

When the shot is taken from the front the food also has a background to experiment with. Such empty spaces should tell something about the cuisine. It should be surrounded with ingredients, sauces or vessels used in the dish. Such things speak a lot about the dish and give the picture depth.

Natural Light Works Best

Light is very important and poor lighting can ruin the full setup. Placing a diffuser in front of the natural light improves the quality of light. This would reduce the dark shadows caused by sunlight. Some innovation can be done using a white and black colored card which would block or pass on light accordingly.

Holding the Color

It is good to have different props with color but need to be careful that they should not attract all the attention. Preference should be given to neutral backgrounds.

Lines and Layer Effect

The most trusted technique used by photographers where ingredients and props can be used to create a layered effect. Shooting from top creates a better picture in such cases.
